Carnegie   Mellon Robotics Institute (CMRI), as a division of CMU’s School of Computer   Science, was established in 1979 as the world’s first robotics institute and   founded the world’s first Robotics PhD program in 1988, has about 60   full-time faculty members, currently developing systems spanning an array of   fields, including space robotics, medical robotics, industrial systems,   computer vision, and artificial intelligence.

Its   robotic research has a close relationship with military demands, and roughly   one-half of research funding comes from the Defense Department, including   DARPA (the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency), the Army, the Air   Force and the Navy, NASA. And the National Science Foundation (NSF) is   responsible for almost 15% of research funding, and private industries, such   as manufacturing, mining and agriculture, contribute another 15%. Other   federal agencies, including the Department of Agriculture, the Department of   Energy, the Department of Homeland Security, and the National Institute of   Health, are responsible for most of the other research funding.

Besides   the Labs and Groups led by the PIsthe RI has two research centers, Field   Robotics Center (FRC) and National Robotics Engineering Center (NREC). The   FRC at CMU is dedicated to the pursuit of the technology of field robotics,   which is the use of mobile robots in field environments such as work sites   and natural terrain where the robots must safeguard themselves while   performing non-repetitive tasks and objective sensing as well as   self-navigation in random or dynamic environments. The NREC, established as   the commercial arm of the RI with intention of applying robotic technology to   commercial and defense applications, works closely with governments and   industry clients to develop and mature robotic technologies from concept to   commercialization.
