The institute has about 100 faculty members and researchers with academic backgrounds ranging from computer science, mechanics, electrical and electronics engineering, automation and systems science, aerospace engineering to biomedical engineering, neuroscience, and so on. IRIM is dedicated to the transformative research that transitions from theory to robustly deployed systems featuring next-generation robots. The fundamental research includes expertise in mechanics, control, perception, artificial intelligence and cognition, interaction, and systems. The strategic research is organized around three main threads: medical robotics & human augmentation, autonomy, and collaborative robotics. IRIM has Center for Machine Learning, Center for Research into Novel Computing Hierarchies, Decision and Control Laboratory, and Georgia Center for Medical Robotics. Meanwhile, IRIM carries out the Robotarium project that provides a remotely, freely accessible swarm robotics research platform to anyone and democratize robotics by providing the remote access to a state-of-the-art multi-robot research facility. IRIM emphasizes transformative robotics technology that enabled a new generation of applications in fields as diverse as manufacturing, logistics, healthcare, and other commercial and consumer markets segments and encourages the faculty members and researchers to make cross-campus partnerships that significantly increase opportunities for the development of practical innovations that will be useful to society. IRIM has an Industrial Partners Program that allows members to explore opportunities for research collaborations, testing services, consulting relationships, student hiring, and other valuable interactions. |
